What Is Roof Retrofit?

A roof retrofit is the process of modifying an existing roofing system to improve performance without fully removing and replacing the original structure. Retrofits are used to enhance specific system characteristics while retaining much of the existing assembly.

Roof retrofits are distinct from repairs and full replacements, focusing instead on system upgrades.

A roof retrofit upgrades an existing roofing system to improve performance or extend service life.

What Roof Retrofits Typically Address

Retrofits are designed to improve targeted aspects of roofing system behavior.

  • Improved drainage or slope correction
  • Enhanced thermal or moisture performance
  • Structural reinforcement or load redistribution
  • Attachment or wind resistance upgrades

Why Roof Retrofits Are Used

Roof retrofits can extend the functional lifespan of an existing roof when full replacement is not immediately necessary or practical. They are often used to address evolving performance requirements or environmental conditions.

Retrofits may also be used to align older roofs with newer performance standards.

Roof Retrofit vs Roof Replacement

Roof replacement involves removing and installing an entirely new system, while a retrofit modifies and enhances the existing one. The choice depends on overall system condition and performance goals.
