CHAPTER 6 — Tinplate & Galvanized Metal Roofing (1850–1920)

By the mid-1800s, the industrial revolution transformed roofing across Canada. Tinplate and galvanized metal roofing became widely used in cities and towns, offering fire protection, strength, and unprecedented longevity. Metal roofing marked one of the largest technological leaps in Canadian building history.

Why Metal Roofing Became Popular

  • Fire resistance: Critical in dense towns where wooden roofs contributed to devastating fires.
  • Longer lifespan: Tin and zinc-coated iron outlasted wood by decades.
  • Industrial mass-production: Factories made metal sheets affordable and widely available.
  • Weather protection: Excellent performance against rain, snow, and ice.

Tinplate Roofing

Tinplate consisted of thin sheets of iron coated in tin to prevent rust. Lightweight and easy to form, it quickly became the preferred roofing metal for homes, barns, and commercial buildings throughout Eastern Canada.

Galvanized Iron Roofing

Galvanization — coating iron with zinc — made roofs far more resistant to corrosion. These roofs became extremely common in cities due to their low maintenance needs and ability to withstand harsh winters.

Distinctive Styles & Profiles

  • Standing seam metal: Long vertical seams locked together for watertight strength.
  • Corrugated metal: Wavy sheets used in barns and industrial buildings.
  • Stamped tin shingles: Decorative metal tiles used on Victorian homes.

Historical Impact

Metal roofing revolutionized Canadian construction. It reduced fire risk, lowered maintenance costs, and paved the way for the modern steel roofing systems used today. Many 19th-century buildings still have their original tin or galvanized roofs, proving the durability of these early industrial materials.
